THE COSTUME

The Phantom's distinctive purple costume had its origins in the Phantom's initial encounter with the tribes of Bengalla. The tribal shaman painted his body for the ceremony of the Three Skulls of Touganda. When young Kit Walker vowed his dedication to eradicate piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice, he conceived of the idea of a costumed, masked avenger as a way of instilling fear in his enemies, an advantage that might serve him well as a lone fighter against sometimes overwhelming odds. Patterning his costume after the shaman's body paint, he developed the skin-tight suit that provides him disguise and protection, and allows maximum freedom of movement in many difficult environments.
